[Pindi-Islamabad:94701] The Scholar and the Ferryman

A scholar of language and grammar undertook a journey. A river had to be crossed. As was the custom in those days, the scholar hired the boat of a waiting ferryman who took people across the river.

During the journey, the scholar asked the ferryman, with obvious pride and mockery, if he knew anything about grammar and the rules of language.

The ferryman simply replied, "I don't."

"Alas!" retorted the rude scholar of grammar, "You have wasted half of your life."

At this, the sailor was terribly hurt and aggrieved. But he kept quiet. Suddenly the boat was extremely nervous in the high waves and gushing water. "Do you know how to swim, learned Sir?" asked the sailor.

"No!" said the scholar.

The ferryman remarked, "Alas! You have wasted your whole life for the boat is sure to capsize in a few minutes."

Moral: Knowledge in one branch is not enough to be proud about.

[Pindi-Islamabad:94700] Being A Good Leader

In order to be a good leader you have to be willing to do the things in life that a vast majority of people would and will never do. Being a leader requires a person to have passion for people that they may not know very intimately, and confident enough to achieve the goals that they first set out to achieve regardless of how well they truly know someone.

One must also be willing to show the way by encouraging others. Good leaders encourage us to be courageous in expressing ourselves, recognizing that self expression is very much key in the development of life and managing growth.

Most importantly, a leader must be willing to be daring and take risks. A person who doesn't push others to new heights isn't a leader, he is just another person. Good chiefs recognize the power of effectively interacting with others to achieve the stated result that they desire to achieve.

English Translation of Al-Quran

[27].Surah Al-Naml [The Ants]

Ayat 76. Verily, this Quran narrates to the Children of Israel most of that about which they differ.

Ayat 77. And truly, it (this Quran) is a guide and a mercy to the believers.

Tafseer of Surah Al Naml (The Ants) Ayat 76. Verily this Quran doth explain to the Children of Israel most of the matters in which they disagree. The Jews had numerous sects. Some were altogether out of the pale, e.g., the Samaritans, who had a separate Tawrah of their own: they hated the other Jews and were hated by them. But even in the orthodox body, there were several sects, of which the following may be mentioned: (1) the Pharisees, who were literalists, formalists, and fatalists, and had a large body of traditional literature, with which they overlaid the Law of Moses; (2) the Sadducees, who were rationalists, and seemed to have doubted the doctrine of the Resurrection or of a Hereafter; (3) the Essenes, who practiced a sort of Communism and Asceticism and prohibited marriage. About many of their doctrines they had bitter disputes, which were settled by the Qur'an, which supplemented and perfected the Law of Moses. It also explained clearly the attributes of Allah and the nature of Revelation, and the doctrine of the Hereafter. And it certainly is a Guide and a Mercy to those who believe.

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Qur'an and abases others.''

[Muslim Book 04, Chapter 138, Hadith # 1780]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Naml Ayat 77. “And truly, it (this Quran) is a guide and a mercy to the believers” Only such people will be elevated who act upon the teachings of the Qur'an and abstain from what is forbidden by Allah. The Muslims of the early centuries of Islam were blessed with great honour by Allah because they loved and applied the Qur'an. Because of this meaningful attachment with the Qur'an, they made great achievements in religious and worldly spheres. Those who neglected the teachings of Islam will be disgraced and humiliated. May Allah guide and enable us to re-establish our contact with the Qur'an so that we can regain our past glory. Exaltation and humiliation mentioned in the Hadith is bound to happen in both this life and the Hereafter.

Situation: Often we need our lookup formulas to go wild. Not in the sense of go-wild-and-chomp-a-few-kilo-bytes-of-data sense. But wild like wild cards.
For eg. In the below data, we may not remember the full name of sales person, but we know that her name starts with jac. Now how do you get the sales amount for that person?

Simple. Use wild cards. Like this: =VLOOKUP("jac*",$B$5:$E$17,3,FALSE) to fetch the value from 3rd column for the person whose name starts with jac

[Pindi-Islamabad:94696] Story: Daddy – Can I have $10?

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5 year old son waiting for him at the door.

"Daddy, may I ask you a question?"

"Yeah, sure, what is it?" replied the man.

"Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?"

"That's none of your business! What makes you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.

"I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?" pleaded the little boy.

"If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour."

"Oh, " the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, "Daddy, may I borrow $10.00 please?"

The father was furious. "If the only reason you want to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you're being so selfish. I work long, hard hours everyday and don't have time for such childish games."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy's questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money. After an hour or so , the man had calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. May be there was something he really needed to buy with that $10.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. "Are you asleep son?" he asked.

"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier," said the man. "It's been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here's that $10.00 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, beaming. "Oh, thank you daddy!" he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some more crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the man.

"Why did you want more money if you already had some?" the father grumbled.

"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.

"Daddy, I have $20.00 now… Can I buy an hour of your time?"

حضرت شیخ بلخیؒ اور حضرت ابراہم بن اوہمؒ دونوں ہم زمانہ تھے۔ کہا جاتا ہے کہ ایک بار حضرت شیخ بلخیؒ اپنے دوست ابراہم بن اوہم ؒ کے پاس آۓ اور کہا کہ میں ایک تجارتی سفر پر جا رہا ہوں تو سوچا جانے سے پہلے آپ سے ملاقات کر لوں، کیونکہ اندازہ ہے کہ سفر میں کئی مہینے لگ جائیں گے۔ اس ملاقات کے چند دن بعد حضرت ابراہیم بن اوہم نے دیکھا کہ شفیق بلخیؒ دوبارہ مسجد میں موجود ہیں، پوچھا آپ سفر پر نہیں گئے، کہا، گیا تھا لیکن راستے میں ایک واقعہ دیکھ کر واپس ہوا، ایک غیر آباد جگہ پہنچ کر میں نے وہاں پڑاؤ ڈآلا ۔ وہاں میں نے ایک چڑیا دیکھی جو اڑنے کی طاقت سے محروم تھی۔ مجھے اس پر ترس آیا میں سوچنے لگا کہ اس ویرانے میں یہ چڑیا اپنی خوراک کیسے پاتی ہو کی۔ میں اسی سوچ میں تھا کہ ایک اور چڑیا آئی جس نے اپنی چونچ میں کوئی چیز دبا رکھی تھی۔ وہ معذور چڑیا کے سامنے اتری تو چونچ میں موجود چیز اس کے سامنے گِر گئی ۔ معذور چڑیا نے اسے اٹھا کر کھا لیا اور طاقت ور چڑیا اڑ گئی۔
یہ منظر دیکھ کر میں نے کہا "سبحان اللہ! جب ایک چڑیا کا رزق اس طرح اس کے پاس پہنچ سکتا ہے تو مجھے رزق کے لئے شہر درشہر پھرنے کی کیا ضرارت ہے؟ چنانچہ میں نے آگے جانے کا ارادہ ترک کر دیا اور وہیں سے واپس چلا آیا۔"
یہ سن کر حضرت ابراہیم بن اوہمؒ نے کہا کہ " شفیق! تم نے اپاہج پرندے کی طرح بننا کیوں پسند کِیا، تم نے یہ کیوں نہیں سوچا کہ تمہاری مثال اس پرندے کی سی ہو جو اپنی قوتِ بازو سے خود بھی کھاتا ہے اور اپنے دوسرے ہم جنسوں کو بھی کھلاتا ہے۔" شفیق بلخیؒ نے یہ سنا تو ابراہیم بن اوہمؒ کا ہاتھ چوم لیا اور کہا کہ "ابو اسحاق! تم نے میری آنکھ کا پردہ ہٹا دِیا، وہی بات صحیح ہے جو تم نے کہی ۔"
